Pam’s Teaching Schedule at the John C. Campbell Folk School
Weaving - Beginning and Beyond with Pam Howard, January 29-February 4
Discover or reacquaint yourself with four-harness loom weaving in a fun-filled week. Start with the basics of preparing the warp and operating the floor loom to produce a woven sampler. The how-to’s of planning a project, reading a draft, choosing appropriate materials, and finishing will be covered. Now inspired, you’ll weave an individual project. No experience required, but some physical flexibility is needed.

Dyeing To Weave A Scarf with Pam Howard, April 1-7
Enhance your weaving by learning to dye variegated warps. Start the week by dyeing cellulose yarns like rayon, cotton, bamboo, and silk, and then it's on to the floor loom to weave your one-of-a-kind scarf. More advance weavers may create a larger project. If you have taken a weaving class before and consider yourself "beyond beginning," then this is your next step.

Crimp, Color and Create with Dianne Totten and Pam Howard, May 20-26
Make cloth uniquely your own. Explore methods to produce color and texture through shibori, kasuri, differential shrinkage, and the use of cellulose dyes. What happens when these techniques are combined? Watch the possibilities unfold by weaving and dyeing samples and acting on happenstance. Apply new skills to complete a finished cloth. Students must be able to dress a floor loom independently for this intermediate to advanced class.

Martha’s Teaching Schedule at the John C. Campbell Folk School
Spinning Clinic with Norman Kennedy and Martha Owen, February 5-11
Students comfortable with spinning equipment will re-explore everything from fiber preparation to hand position in a historical and worldwide cultural context. Discover the efficient use of equipment used in producing yarn for weaving and knitting in centuries past. Bring antique equipment for expert assistance, or for curiosity’s sake. Sample dyes of antiquity: weld, indigo, and cochineal. For practicing spinners of intermediate level and up.

From Sheep To Shawl with Martha Owen, April 8 - 14
...or rugs, tapestries, socks, or... If you weave, hook rugs, crochet or knit, personalize your pieces by learning the age-old skills of combing, carding, natural dyeing, and spinning. Make your own yarn to add visual interest, softness, color, and texture. Discover the qualities of various breeds of sheep and play with color, fiber blends, and simple novelty effects. The Folk School has all equipment needed for this yarn-intensive week for beginning to intermediate students.
